In 2027, Ghana will celebrate 70 years of independence, marking seven decades of resilience, leadership, cultural pride, and national progress. For Columbus, Ohio, this milestone presents a meaningful opportunity to celebrate Ghana’s history while advancing the longstanding relationship between Columbus and Accra, formalized through their sister cities partnership in 2015.

Over the years, this partnership has fostered cultural exchange, civic engagement, and collaboration among government leaders, traditional authorities, businesses, and community organizations. These efforts have helped strengthen ties between Ghana and Central Ohio while creating opportunities for deeper cooperation in economic development, education, tourism, healthcare, and workforce development.

Recent initiatives demonstrate the partnership’s growing impact. We helped convene leaders advancing the Columbus–Ghana nursing partnership, an initiative designed to bring qualified nurses from Ghana to help address workforce shortages in Columbus while facilitating knowledge transfer, professional exchange, and shared learning between healthcare systems. This collaboration illustrates how international partnerships can respond to local workforce needs while creating opportunities for mutual benefit.

We also celebrated Ghanaian heritage and traditional leadership through the coronation of Nana Ama Afowa as a cultural custodian, recognizing the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural traditions and strengthening the connections between traditional institutions, the Ghanaian diaspora, and the broader Columbus community.

Looking ahead, Ghana at 70 offers an opportunity to build on this momentum. A signature celebration could bring together Ghanaian and American government representatives, traditional leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, educators, healthcare professionals, and diaspora communities. Cultural programming, historical storytelling, and musical performances could celebrate Ghana’s journey, while business summits and professional exchanges create pathways for investment, trade, tourism, education, and workforce development. The proposed engagement with the Ghana Enterprises Agency and participation in the Ohio African Chamber of Commerce’s business summit could further advance these goals.

Ultimately, Ghana at 70 should be more than an anniversary celebration. It should be a defining moment for the Columbus–Accra partnership honoring the relationships built since 2015, showcasing the contributions of the Ghanaian diaspora, and translating cultural diplomacy into tangible opportunities for both communities.
